Garage door stuck or broken in NYC? Get matched with a local repair company
A garage door that won’t open can trap your car, and a door that won’t close leaves the house open. Garage doors are heavy and held up by springs under a lot of tension, so most repairs are a job for a pro. Here’s what’s safe to check yourself.
- Free to use — no obligation
- Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Bronx, Staten Island

Heads-up: we’re a referral service, not the company that does the work. We pass your request to independent local providers.
What to do right now
- Stop pressing the opener button. Running the motor against a stuck or broken door can make the damage worse.
- Look at the springs above the door. If one is snapped (a visible gap in the coil), don’t try to lift the door.
- Check the photo-eye sensors near the floor on each side. They must face each other with nothing blocking them, and a light on each one is usually lit.
- Check the opener’s outlet and the breaker, and replace the remote’s battery.
- If the door is off its track or hanging crooked, keep people and cars away from it and leave it where it is.
⚠️ Safety first
- Never loosen, adjust or remove torsion springs or cables yourself. The stored tension can cause serious injury.
- Pulling the red emergency release on a door with a broken spring can make it slam down. Don’t pull it unless the door is fully closed.
- Keep children away from a door that’s stuck partway open.
Common causes
- Broken torsion or extension spring
- Frayed or snapped lift cables
- Door off its track after a bump
- Misaligned or dirty safety sensors
- Opener motor or logic-board failure
- Worn rollers or hinges
What to ask before you hire
- Do you hold a NYC Home Improvement Contractor license for residential work? (You can check one on the DCWP site.)
- What is your service-call fee, and will you quote the full repair before starting?
- Do you carry the right springs for my door’s size and weight, and will you replace both springs if one broke?
- What warranty comes with the parts and the labor?
- Can you service my opener brand, or only the door?

Garage Door Repair in Brooklyn
Detached garages and shared driveways behind Brooklyn homes, from Marine Park to Bay Ridge, often have older doors and openers. Tell the company if the garage opens onto a shared driveway or alley.
Get matched with a Brooklyn pro →Garage Door Repair in Queens
Attached and detached garages are common in Queens neighborhoods like Bayside, Fresh Meadows and Middle Village. Mention the door size (single or double) when you ask for a quote.
Get matched with a Queens pro →Garage Door Repair in Manhattan
Private garages are rare in Manhattan. Calls here are usually about townhouse garages, small commercial roll-up doors, or building garages run by management. Building garages go through the managing agent.
Get matched with a Manhattan pro →Garage Door Repair in Bronx
Garages in neighborhoods like Throgs Neck, Country Club and Riverdale often face steep driveways. A door that stops halfway on a slope needs extra care, so keep the area clear.
Get matched with a Bronx pro →Garage Door Repair in Staten Island
Staten Island has many attached garages, and cold or wet weather is hard on springs and rollers. A broken spring that leaves the car trapped is a common emergency.

Can I open the garage door by hand?
Only if the springs are intact. With the door fully closed, the emergency release lets you lift it by hand. With a broken spring the door is too heavy and can fall. Don’t try it.
Why does my door reverse right before it closes?
Usually the safety sensors are blocked, dirty or out of line. Clean the lenses and make sure they face each other.
Do I need a licensed company?
In NYC, residential home-improvement work generally requires a DCWP Home Improvement Contractor license. Ask for the license number and check it on the DCWP site.
Is the referral free?
Yes. You deal with the repair company directly on price.
